FRANKLIN PARK---The women’s league still gaining notoriety...endeavoring to extend itself more. It may not be as much as the men’s league but it’s gradually making its way. The women’s championship game took place this past Sunday at Franklin Park gym. The matchup for the game was the Lady Punishment vs. Saetas. This matchup has, in some way, become a rivalry within the minute existence of their league.
For Sunday's matchup, a key player for Lady Punishment, point guard Rosy, was out with an injury. And without the orchestrator of the offense, you would think things would take a turn for the bad. And it did as the Lady Punishment found themselves down early...14-2 as they had no answer for Saetas’ furious run to begin the game. However, the togetherness of the Lady Punishment provided a defensive spark...applying persistent defensive pressure that ignited their offense...going on a ferocious 17-3 run to lead at halftime...19-17.
In the second half, a defensive slugfest took place as both teams struggled mightily to create consistent offense...missing open shots as chaotic defensive pressure had something to do with that. In the end, the Lady Punishment made the buckets that mattered the most with the game on the line...surviving a hard fought battle with 30-25 victory to win it all. Lady Punishment’s Brianna Garcia led the way with 12 points as she snagged up the MVP to put the cherry on the top for them.
